Students from Lapeer and Genesee Intermediate School Districts Gather at Flint Youth Summit

May 18, 2012 - Students from across Lapeer and Genesee Intermediate School Districts gathered to share data and celebrate the Flint River watershed on Friday, May 11, at the GREEN Student Summit at Kettering University.

Students from Kearsley Armstrong Middle School in Flint presented their project, which won received a 1st place award from the Michigan Future Problem Solving State Bowl. They won the award for their watershed action project involving storm drain stenciling and illicit discharge testing as part of compliance with the school's stormwater permitting process. The students worked with Sue Kubic from the Genesee County Drain Commissioner's Office and Tammie Heazlit from Arch Environmental to complete the project. Students will go on to a national competition in Indianapolis next month!

Students from North Branch Middle School class presented on their projects, including a rain garden, paper and plastic school recycling and a birdhouse project. Students were interested in pursuing a Michigan Green School Designation for their projects as part of Earth Force's Watershed STEM Initiative.
