GM GREEN in East LansingMay 12, 2011 - Students from St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School in East Lansing had a beautiful day to explore the health of the Red Cedar River, a tributary of the middle Grand River.
GM Mentor Jim Eckland and Brian Borzenski of the Grand River Assembly were on hand as the macroinvertebrate experts (and experienced fishermen) guiding students into the river, where they collected crayfish, caddisflies and other specimens. The macroinvertabrate sampling indicated the river was in medium to good health. Chemical tests showed low nitrates and phosphates, a good sign that farmland fertilizers on Michigan State University's extensive agricultural areas upstream were under good management. Students videotaped their experience and will put the footage together on YouTube as their service-learning project. Thanks to Stephaney Guild at Woldumar Nature Center for her continued support of the GREEN program! |
