Description: Earth Force partners with General Motors and the Lapeer Intermediate School District to engage youth in GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Education Network), in which young people develop into active citizens who improve conditions in their watersheds now and in the future.

Why We Are Here: Lapeer County is a rural area outside the City of Flint and is a part of the agriculturally rich thumb area of Michigan surrounded by Lake Huron. As part of both the Flint River and the Clinton River watersheds, farming and development in this area affects water quality in nearby Lake St. Clair and Saginaw Bay.

The 1,400 square mile Flint River watershed is home to over 600,000 people, nearly half of whom drink groundwater affected by the Flint River. Over 250,000 more use the river as the backup supply for drinking water. Furthermore, the Clinton River Watershed covers 760 square miles across four Southeast Michigan counties. Earth Force is excited to apply a whole watershed approach here, and works in both Genesee and Lapeer Counties with six General Motors facilities to carry out a successful GREEN program.

What We Are Doing: Earth Force partners with the Flint River Watershed Coalition, Michigan State University Extension, the Drain Commissioner's office, the Clinton River Watershed Council and several GM facilities to implement GREEN in Lapeer County. We are now working on institutionalizing GREEN and service-learning at the Intermediate School District level through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. To date, we have trained 13 teachers in the Earth Force Protecting Our Watersheds curriculum from Lapeer Intermediate School District.

Earth Force History in this Community: The Lapeer Intermediate School District, the Flint River Watershed Coalition and the Clinton River Watershed Council received a three-year Corporation for National and Community Service grant to institutionalize GREEN and the Earth Force six step service-learning process throughout K-12 institutions in the region.
