School: Kensington High School

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Kensington High School’s Woodrock Outdoor Leadership Force (WOLF) continued to work hard on their tree farm, located on a formerly vacant lot adjacent to the school property. Eager to increase tree canopy cover in their relatively baron neighborhood, the students have stepped up their outreach activities in the community, in hopes to encourage local residents to plant trees on their properties.

In the Fall of 2004, the Kensington students were visited by the Earth Force club from Pennsbury High School in Bucks County. The suburban students (whose story is featured in this yearbook) were planning a tree-planting project of their own, and wanted to learn how their urban counterparts were running things. The visit was a meaningful one for both groups, and inspired the Pennsbury students to plant a tree in honor of the students at Kensington.

The WOLF students stepped up their community outreach campaign this school year, once again hosting an Arbor Day celebration at the tree farm. They held tree care workshops for local residents and celebrated the successes they have achieved through their work on the tree farm.

The WOLF students presented their work at the DVEF Youth Summit at the Philadelphia Zoo in April and also at the DCNR Youth Summit in May. As word of their tree farm grows, they continue to inspire all who hear of them and raise local awareness of the benefits of trees.
