| Why do we care? |
|
- More than 1.2 billion people in this world lack access to clean water
- In Kenya there are still people who have to walk for 10 hours to look for water - Providing safe drinking water and sanitation world wide would save money from health budgets |

The Event: Runoff of wastes and nutrients from farm land
The Problem: Runoff from Pennsylvania farmland may contain nitrogen and phosphates from animal wastes and fertilizers. This farmland runoff enters watersheds and may impact habitats for certain aquatic organisms.
The Issue: Can the agricultural impact on water quality be reduced without additonal financial strain on farmers?

Learn about aquatic ecology, waterquality, and watersheds. See maps, summaries, and informationon lakes and rivers nationwide. Use data visualization toolsto watch data change through time and explore relationshipsamong variables. (NSF)
"Exploring the Environment" features 25 online modules that put students in problem-basedlearning scenarios. In one module, students predict theimpact of increased carbon dioxide on the wheat yield inKansas. In another, they predict weather 48 hours in advance.Topics include coral reefs, climate change, the Everglades, mountain gorillas, rainforests, volcanoes, water quality, andozone depletion. (NASA)
