After a walk around their school grounds, Mrs. Ward’s 2nd grade class realized there wasn't a place to put trash. In addition to spoiling the beauty of their campus, litter was also a threat to the stream that runs along the side of the Joe Walker Elementary School campus. They spoke to the principal and other staff members and asked why there weren't any garbage cans outside the school buildings. They received no real reason why, so they presented reasons why the school did need them in a letter to Ms. Fleck, Principal of the school. With permission from their principal to proceed, Mrs. Ward’s students spoke to a district grounds person. He gave them advice about the best kind of trashcans and where to place them.
In April, the class also did a school grounds and stream clean up. They sorted the trash and found out that it was mostly paper and plastic. Right now, trashcans have been ordered and Mrs. Ward’s class couldn't be happier.
