Impassioned by their unit on insects, Ms. Sacca’s 2nd grade class at Allegheny Traditional Academy in Pittsburgh beautified their school and improved the habitat for native butterflies and birds.
They had been studying butterflies as part of their Spring Unit on insects when they decided that their Earth Force project had to also include butterflies. After checking the school grounds for any sort of habitat, they found a planter in the front of the school would be a great place to plant a small garden. They prepared the soil and planted native plants that attract butterflies and birds. Their garden will allow students to watch butterflies up close and study their behavior and also provide a beautiful place for our community. It is sure to bring many smiles to an area that is not always looked at as “beautiful.”
