Walls and Water are Winners at Brown Elementary

Date: 20 Jul 2006

What do fourth and fifth graders at Brown Elementary School REALLY like and dislike about their school?

After conducting a photographic inventory of their school and discussing the results students discovered there were several things they wanted to change about their school. What was at the top of their list you ask…the blank, boring walls! Students were ready with ideas of murals and other artwork to jazz up the walls.

However, after the initial stages of developing their plan, they hit a road block. After discussing their ideas with the principal they discovered that the walls could not be painted at that time.

Have no fear, the students trucked on and decided to another issue of importance at Brown: Water Quality. They tested the water throughout the school (bathroom sinks, drinking fountains, etc.) and determined that the water was within Denver’s clean water standards.

To be sure, students heard from an expert from Denver Water. He was so impressed with their work and genuine interest each student received free water kits to use at home for reducing their water usage.

Last but certainly not least, the students conducted research on water quality over the Internet and made fact posters with the information they found. The posters were laminated and hung above the water fountains around Brown for all to see!
