Jovenes Sirviendo a la Nacion (or JSN for short,) is a bilingual, biliterate group of seventh graders at Bryant-Webster K-8. As part of their community project, they were determined to “say no to discrimination” in their school and community. It was a difficult issue for the JSN students to agree to take on. I

Initially the group was convinced that they would do a service learning project on problems related to the gangs in NW Denver. Because of the national focus on immigration this past Spring, though, the students shifted their focus to take a stand against discrimination against Latinos.

The first part of their project was to talk with community organizers about what they could do to prevent discrimination and to help break the silence when it happens. Los Padres Unidos, a local parent organization, provided some background information and support for the students to ask very unpopular questions.
