Did you know...

Date: 20 Jul 2006

Originally grappling with two subjects, recycling and homelessness, the Better Community Better Life (BCBL) group of students at Bryant-Webster decided that recycling affected their individual communities more.

The students set out to educate their peers and the greater community about the value of recycling and to implement a school wide recycling program. The students began by bringing in a speaker from Denver Recycles. The students learned the ins and outs of recycling first hand.

Students in the BCBL used these newly learned facts to make bookmarks with the heading “Did you know…” Some bookmarks read “Every Sunday, Americans waste 90% of recyclable newspaper,” and “One ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees and 7,000 gallons of water.” By researching and producing these bookmarks, the group succeeded in their goal to get information to the students.

With all of this knowledge of recycling, the BCBL group presented their plan for a recycling project in their school to their principal, Ms. Salazar with the hope to drive home their goal of implementing a school wide recycling program. Ms. Salazar approved their project and the students then began finding spaces in every classroom for paper recycling bins.

While their future goal of getting a Denver Recycles Dumpster at their school is still in the works, the BCBL group succeeded in taking the first steps towards reducing waste and increasing knowledge of recycling.
