Earth Force at Ellis Kicks (Cigarette) Butts!

Date: 24 Jul 2006

In their own words...

...In August 2005, we started learning about Earth Force and how we can make our community better. We looked around the school and found cigarette butts, cigarette packs and burnt stuff.

We decided to pick second-hand smoke as our problem because it is a serious problem that pollutes our air and is bad for our health. We investigated this problem and found out there are many dangers of second-hand smoke and smoking. We also learned some things we can do about the problem.

We decided to teach the other students at Ellis about this problem. Another big part of our project was to make signs and take action by chanting our “Second Hand Smoke” chant: “Second-hand smoke, Second-hand smoke – it’s no joke! Second Hand Smoke!”

We went to the Earth Force Youth Summit and won first prize at the Speak Out Competition. We also got over 200 signatures on a pledge for not smoking. One grandmother pledged to stop smoking for her grandkids.

Earth Force Service Learning is really important and fun because we learned more about our school and community – and we made a change!
