Beginning at the epicenter of advisor Ms. Stephanie Reeh, excitement spread through the Mitchell Elementary Youth Council - or "Student Force!" as they called themselves - and out into the rest of the school.
Members of the Student Force considered it their job to deal with issues that effected Mitchell students on a day-to-day basis, and they took their responsibilities seriously.
As part of their first year of work, the Force identified two critical issues: the school’s paper recycling program and the lack of school spirit.
During the fall, the Student Force worked hard running the school-wide paper recycling program. They made sure that cardboard boxes, labeled as recycling bins, were placed in each classroom. They worked with teachers to make them and their classes aware of the big recycling dumpster located outside the school.
Once the students got the recycling program running smoothly, they switched gears to tackle the issue of school spirit - or, more exactly, the lack thereof. They coordinated a School Spirit Week, complete with a "Bronco Day," when students were encouraged to wear blue and orange to school. They made signs and posted them all over the school to make sure students as well as teachers knew what colors to wear, and when!
The Student Force’s involvement in school spirit spilled over into helping to plan the annual school talent show, too!
