Their school is surrounded by natural wetlands in a northeastern community called Tampa Palms. Thanks to a SPLASH grant, students in this private school are able to study their watershed further upriver in Nature’s Classroom and use materials supplied by SWFWMD to educate teachers and students about the importance of maintaining its health.
In order to encourage teachers at their school to address watershed health, students presented watershed curriculum and showed how curricular standards could be addressed.
Students have used puppets and books provided by SWFWMD to educate students in K-3rd grade while writing scripts with 5th grade students.
Students are looking into the possibility of educating their community through use of a pond on campus.
Ms. Gembarowski is a 2006 recipient of a SPLASH grant offered by Southwest Florida Water Management District. Her class is sponsored by the Pinellas County Environmental Fund.
