Clay Schofield’s class was eager to improve their school community and quickly agreed on developing a schoolyard greening project. They connected with Kensington WOLF Program students and even received trees from the tree farm for use in their project.

Engaging in a seed, flower and tree planting project outside the school, Bryan, Ryan, Louis and Katie, learned that plants demand constant care, having lost a few to the heat over a long weekend. Darryl and Alexa learned you can damage plants by over watering, too. Alexa, a culinary student whose dad is a chef and who helps in her grandmother’s herb garden, is hoping the school will begin offering classes in horticulture so she can grow her interests in both plants and food! Mr. Schofield’s class submitted designs for a garden around the flag pole in the front of the school. The resulting plan is to have a walkway and a bench with flowers arranged in the form of a lion, the school mascot.

Mr. Schofield’s class also participated in the Philadelphia School District’s Character Education Grant. They worked with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and helped improve a local family’s home. At the Character Education Final Exhibition of Learning they had the opportunity to present their project to an audience of students, teachers, school administrators and public officials across Philadelphia.
