The GBWAP partner, Artist Boat, a non-profit organization based in Galveston, is reaching Galveston and Houston middle-school students in a unique and memorable way. Through the Eco-Art Workshop and Adventure Program, students learn the importance of Galveston Bay by participating in an in-class workshop followed by a field experience in which they either kayak at Galveston Island State Park or take a vessel tour of Galveston Bay aboard the Seagull II out of the Texas Seaport Museum.

Artist Boat founder and Executive Director Karla Klay believes this program benefits students not only by the knowledge they gain, but also helps them retain the knowledge by combining learning with a positive and exciting experience in nature. According to Klay, the Texas Education Agency will compare scores on the TAKS exams of students who participate in the Eco-Art and Adventure Program with scores of students who have not participated. Klay believes scores of students who participated in the program will be higher than those who did not. Klay hopes that as a result the Eco-Art Workshop and Adventure Program will become a model program for coastal communities all over Texas.

In its fourth year of operation, Artist Boat is dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the disciplines of the sciences and the arts.
