The project of choice for our group at Florence Fuller ended up being to cultivate a native garden. Be it for the possibility of attracting the likes of butterflies and ladybugs or the sheer beauty of some of the plants and flowers, this one project had the children excited from the very beginning. It easily beat out the second place competitor in the voting which was a project where we would construct birdhouses. Though somewhat typical, the intention of the children was merely to beautify an important place in our community for the underprivileged which happened to be in the need of some serious perking up. Though serving the community in a valiant way, the Florence Fuller Center is not known for its landscaping. The garden did add a splash of color and vitality to the drab structures. The children have also noticed a great deal of activity from ladybugs and butterflies in the few weeks since the plants have taken root. The children’s and administrators’ call for a bench were also answered. The bench which the children constructed themselves will provide a place for people to sit and reflect on their work well done, the beauty of the plants, and generally enjoy the outside world.
