Our Earth Force team began meeting in the Fall. The first thing that we learned about was storm water and run-off and non-point source pollution. In other words, we learned that any crap that is on the ground will go down the storm drains and into the Lake. We did an inventory of the storm drains in our neighborhood, but it got too cold before we could stencil them. So, we will do that this summer.
We then learned about garbage and how important it is to recycle. We conducted a survey in our neighborhood to find out how many people recycle. The results didn’t look pretty. Not many of our neighbors recycle, and hardly anyone recycles paper, cans, plastic, and glass.
We passed out City of Erie Recycling guides, and organized a neighborhood clean-up. We gave recycling bins to the households that showed up for the clean-up. We also attended the Neighborhood association meeting to advertise for recycling and for the clean-up. Hopefully our efforts have increased the amount of recycling in our neighborhood.
