We’d like to tell you about all that we’ve been doing this year to help make a difference in our community.
For starters, we decided that Global Warming was the issue we wanted to work towards solving.
Our focus was on Global Warming awareness, since we knew that the only way we were going to help prevent this problem was to first inform other kids what global warming was.
-We created posters and hung them around our school.
-We also had messages read over our announcements telling what global warming is and how we can prevent it.
-We had a really fun assembly to get everyone in the school involved. We called this an EARTH FEST. Our focus for the assembly was how the students could all make a difference in our environment by doing simple things. We had Hoppin Hope begin by telling the kids a story and
we had cheerleaders getting the crowd excited with Earth Fest and saving the earth cheers. We then performed a skit explaining what global warming is and how it is harming the earth.
-We had an essay contest in our Language Arts class. Winning essays were selected and read during the assembly. The essays focused on what global warming is, how every student can help to prevent it, and why we should prevent it.
-The students all watched a power point that we created. It showed simple things we can do at home and school to stop global warming. We gave tips like switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs, walking or riding your bikes instead of driving the car everywhere, taking shorter showers, reusing plastic bags, or better yet…switch to reusable woven bags.
-Everyone in the school received their own tree to plant at their home. (The trees were purchased with the money we made from our recycling program this year, and our PTO.) We created brochures that each student received with their tree. The brochures explained how and where to plant the tree. We informed students that they are helping prevent global warming by planting their tree because trees produce oxygen and help to absorb the harmful CO2 that we are putting into the air.
It was a fun day, and the students learned a lot about global warming. They especially learned that even though they are kids, they can help our earth stay healthy…they can make a difference.
