Once we determined that our school and parish would be our community, we began our investigation into global warming. We discussed different theories and watched An Inconvenient Truth.
We began our investigation into alternative energy sources. We looked at wind, water and solar power. We also looked at bio-fuels. Through hands-on activities we investigated how these technologies worked. We built windmills, solar cars, and investigated the process of fermentation.
Once we had a better understanding of global warming and alternative energies, we created educational pamphlets to help spread the word. Our pamphlets included an overview of global warming and information on what individuals can do to help with the problems caused by using non-renewable energies.
Throughout our project there were various events and announcements surrounding global warming or climate change; including the Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change Assessment Report. The importance of our project was driven home by additional news coverage of intensified storms, flooding, and even endangered species. Each of us found that through individual efforts, we can make a difference. We also found that we need to take a stand as a group, county, state, nation, and world to help change the course we are following.
