Listening to students explain the benefits of using CFLs is like listening to a CFL manufacturer. According to students, CFLs prevent greenhouse gases, last ten times longer than standard bulbs and can save consumers hundreds of dollars. It is this message that students conveyed to customers of their local Publix and legislators convening in Tallahassee who applauded students for their service and leadership.
Promoting use of CFLs is only one concern. Students are also contacting managers of several stores to see if there is interest in becoming a collection site for discarded CFLs. Students have learned the importance of keeping the mercury contained in the bulb away from local landfills and incinerators.
Earlier this year, Ms. Alvarez was awarded the Guardian of the Bay Award offered by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program for her students’ work on educating the public about the harm of dog waste on the environment during their “Scoop the Poop” Earth Force project completed last year. This year’s students continued their interest in helping pooches by collecting leashes, collars, towels and food to donate to their local animal shelter.
This month Ms. Alvarez was awarded a “Head of the Class” award from WFTS Channel 28 ABC and could be seen on a TV segment speaking about her Earth Force projects – past and present – as well as the class trip to the Florida House of Representatives in April.
