Boyette Springs Elementary is located in a quaint neighborhood within a subdivision in Riverview, Florida. Named for the many natural springs and ponds throughout the area, students enjoy time in this nature park located across the street from their school.
After consulting with officials from the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, students divided into 4 committees and devised a plan to ameliorate the problems. Community involvement was paramount to their efforts; several students attended a local civic meeting where they spoke to the audience about their concerns with the park. They also introduced the Friends of the Park group to their idea of having monthly clean-ups. Jeff Mauch, an official from Hillsborough County’s PRC, provided students with 4 trash cans which they painted and placed in the park on “Clean Up Day”.
