15 Feb 2008- The Earth Force Club at Azalea Elementary is currently working on reaching out to the school community to improve the recycling of paper and cans in our area. The students currently recycle all the school's paper each week. They are starting a Tuesday morning and afternoon "Drop Off Your Recycling" program to encourage all parents that drop off their students at school to also drop off their paper and cans weekly.
The county started an incentive program this year trying to get schools to recycle paper and cans more. The students are keeping track of the amount of recycling being collected and the amount of money the school makes from the recycling. Some of the students have also been doing research on how recycling papers and cans affect our environment. They have made posters, sent home flyers, put articles in the school newspaper and have spoken on the schools TV news program.
The club is looking into speaking at the next neighborhood council meeting to try and get more community members to recycle at Azalea. On top of this they continue to work on their Native plant garden, which was started two years ago with the first Earth Force club. The students are in the process of setting up a green house to grow native plants to either give or sell at the school carnival.
