Ladder of Prejudice

Date: 19 Feb 2008

Location: Erie

The 8th Grade students at JoAnna Connell School teach other students in their school about the ladder of prejudice. The goal is to have other students understand what tolerance is and why it is important to look at ways in which our actions are directed by prejudice. Looking at prejudice and tolerance is important for Earth Force because when trying to solve environmental issues we encounter very different views thoughout our work with those involved or afftected by the issues.

The ladder of prejudice includes the following steps:

  • Step one: Speech
  • Step two: Avoidance
  • Step three: Discrimination
  • Step four: Attack
  • Step five: Extermination
Ladder of Prejudice
Students from JoAnna Connell School A 8th grade students explained to students in grades 4 through 8 the steps of prejudice pointing out that prejudice is a behavior we can observe in our schools. Students may even experience it in their classroom. It is not unusual for students to hear remarks that make others feel bad (SPEECH) or that we experience that a student is ignored by the rest of the class (AVOIDANCE) or that we point out that certain people are very different from us (DISCRIMINATION).
The students used visuals, gave presentations, led question and answer periods and directed students to fill out worksheets. They had feed back and self evaluation build into their 40 minute teaching period. The students did a terrific job taking on the teacher role.

When will we stop climbing this ladder? When will we stop blaming each other and start working together to solve community problems?
