Slavens Elementary host "Critter Care Celebration"

Denver, May 16, 2008 – Employing stuffed animals, Twister® spinners, and poster boards, students at Slavens Elementary School helped their classmates learn how to care for animals and lower homelessness for animals. On May 15, fifty-four fourth graders hosted "Critter Care Celebration," a service learning event based on FrontRange Earth Force's Community Action and Problem Solving curriculum.

The project included inviting speakers from animal organizations into the classroom and calling community members to measure awareness about animal issues. Following their research the students assembled displays and designed activities to teach others quality pet care and prevent animal homelessness. The class also sold bracelets and dog biscuits to raise money for animal organizations.

"We didn't see the booths until today," said Ms. Frank, one of three fourth grade teachers at Slavens. "They created everything on their own. They had the vision and made it happen. The kids really showed a lot of passion around the project."
