School Composting

Date: 24 Jul 2008

School: Park Forest Elementary School

Location: State College

All-school Composting was a project that was promoted and implemented by Jennifer Cody’s fifth grade class. The composting will use the waste materials from the school lunch program. Students began to examine the possibilities of a garbageless lunch. This plan would reduce the garbage in their lunches. These efforts were capped off by lanning for a school garden, which will use the compost made from the leftover school lunches.

The students are moving on to new projects. One that is in the works is the rescuing of the weed infested islands in the school parking lot. This project will broaden the students’ awareness of environmental stewardship. They have adopted Mahatma Gandhi quote as their motto – “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
