Styrofoam Is Out At Westlake Middle School

Date: 24 Jul 2008

School: Westlake Middle School

Location: Erie, Pennsylvania

Thanks to the hard work and persuasive powers of the Earth Force students this school will no longer use styrofoam trays in the cafeteria. The students had research the tray dilemma that has long plagued school cafeterias to find the best environmentally friendly options. The students met with the food service provider to press their cases and the use of bioplastics in the cafeterias. However, the matter seemed to be at a halt when they were told it was cost prohibitive. However, these students did not give up and they continued their campaign for a change. Their persistence paid off when they were notified by the food service provider that they would meet them half way. Bioplastics were too expensive but they would return to the use of the old, traditional plastic trays. The students were so successful in their efforts that the food service manager is now pressing the other middle school and high school to follow suit. Thanks to Judy Jobes and this elective class we know that teens do make a difference!
