Local Green Team Takes Community Action

The Green Team at Collegiate Academy is dedicated to promoting the message of environmentalism and conservation, not only in our school but also in other schools throughout the area. Through instruction and interaction, the Green Team has the goal of educating younger students across Erie on the importance of a greener future.

The Green Team conducted its first energy audit three years ago and since then has been constantly monitoring the lighting patterns and strongly encouraging the substitution of electrical lighting for natural light throughout the school. Also, due to the energy audit the Green Team was awarded a grant to install 40 motion detectors in low-traffic areas throughout the school in order to further conserve electricity. Finally, in accordance with the Green Team’s revered message of environmental education they have traveled to Harding Elementary School to teach them how to conduct their own energy audit, and hope to branch out to more schools within the Erie School District. Also the Green Team has had members present the energy audit at places such as the Conference for Superintendents of Western Pennsylvania at the Nemacolin Resort, the Erie Home and Garden Expo, and more recently at the Green Building Alliance Healthy Schools Summit on June 19, 2009 at Clarion University, all in order to further the knowledge and motivation to create a healthier environment.
