Sandie Nichols 6th grade students at James Island Middle School have worked on a number of projects this year. Students have evaluated energy use in their classroom and school in an effort to decrease their use of energy and save money for their school. These students have hosted presentations and created information boards to spread the word about smart energy use!
Another class of sixth grade students has taken over the school's recycling program and made it bigger and better than ever. These students work every week to collect the recycling bins throughout the school and put all recycling curbside to be picked up. Additionally these students take shifts during the lunch period rinsing and collecting all recyclable bottles and cans so that they can be capture and diverted from the landfill.
Finally some 6th grade students teamed up with 7th grade students from David Stanford's class to work on restoring oyster habitat. These students all completed educational units on oyster reefs which culminated in them spending a day with the folks from SC Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Program. During their excursion to Fort Johnson these students spent the day bagging oyster shell and installing the bags to create a brand new habitat for an oyster reef to grow!
