James Island Charter High School

Date: 15 Jul 2010

Location: Charleston

James Island Charter High School students work year-round to improve their school campus as well as the surrounding community. These students, led by their teacher/mentor Michelle Lee, work through a variety of clubs and classrooms to complete environmental service projects throughout the school year.

These students have lead multiple marsh and beach sweep projects to clean up roadside marsh habitats and Folly Beach. These students have also made their campus a focus for their “going green” message. This student body works with faculty to maintain a native plant garden in front of their gym. This extensive garden highlights sustainability features for the greater community to examine with the hopes of implementing these types of features in individual’s homes and businesses. The garden has also provided a hub to get freshman leadership teams involved in cleanup projects on the campus and beyond.
