Working with their teacher, Jennifer Roberson, students at Stiles Point Elementary School got the good news about our county's expanded recycling program and decided that more people needed to know what could be recycled in Charleston county. These students have done their research, communicating with representative from Charleston County Environmental Services and Fisher Recycling. They have decided to make a public service announcement to share with all of the students at their school and other elementary and middle schools on James Island. They are also planning on presenting their project for various clubs such as girl scouts, boy scouts and local church associations.
Recently these students have found another issue that they are passionate about with the news coverage of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. These students are organizing a drive to collect materials to send to assist with wildlife cleanup and rehabilitation. These students may bring donations for The Center for Birds of Prey to send off.
School-wide, Stiles Point students participated in the Keep America Beautiful Clean City Sweeps competition. The entire school contributed to projects to “clean-up” their community including removing trash and debris related to construction from their school campus, restoring picnic tables to add to a public park, decorating trash cans to entice park goers to use them as well as doing a complete overhaul on the public park.
