During the 2003-04 school year, 12 students in teacher Rachel Yzaguirre's special education class in Chicago, Illinois, studied the Indian Creek watershed that flows into Wolf Lake at the William Powers Conservation Area.
The students learned about the identification and removal of invasive plants such as purple loosestrife and dogwood impacting local biodiversity at the site. The students raised Galerucella beetles during the winter and spring to release as a biological control agent for the invasive purple loosestrife plant. The students concluded the school year with a field trip back to Indian Creek for chemical and biological water monitoring of the site, which flows from Wolf Lake into local wetlands and eventually Lake Calumet.
