Christopher Brown, Michael Brown, and Daniel Perez represented Pine Jog’s Earth Force Youth Advisory Board in Sweden this May. The middle school students worked on a project addressing run-off pollution in South Florida. Their project was chosen to represent the USA at an international competition sponsored by Volvo. The Volvo Adventure Awards honors young people working on environmental action projects in their community.
Pine Jog’s YAB members received an all expense paid trip to Goteberg, Sweden from April 30-May 5. During their stay the students interacted with teams from the 14 countries represented. They also made friends with Mattias and Johan, their Swedish hosts from a local middle school. The trip consisted of an excursion to a local amusement park, science museum, forest, Volvo factory, and a youth-led workshop to produce a statement for the United Nations Environment Programme.
The trip was capped off by an awards banquet and dance. Our students won a fourth place prize for their project. Thank you Volvo for an experience that our students will never forget. We would also like to thank Luke Hamlin, Americorps*VISTA volunteer, for his dedication to the Earth Force Youth Advisory Board during his time here at Pine Jog.
