The timeline exercise helped the Harleyville-Ridgeville students to imagine and discuss many factors that affect littering including population changes and how cultural/economic decisions may alter the way products are packaged.

In addition to creating the timeline, the students have surveyed classmates and a few adults to research litter practices. They have discovered that more than half of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders surveyed had littered before. The most common reasons for littering were: 1. My parents litter, 2. There was no trash can around. The students are looking forward to completing a project that will change attitudes and practices regarding littering.
