The GREEN program began at Glasgow Middle School with several walking surveys of the school and its surrounding neighborhood. During the survey, the students uncovered that someone had taken down the fencing which would keep unauthorized use of the school yard.
The students found over-flowing trash cans, oil changing activities and an over-abundance of trash left all over the yard, particularly after the weekend due to the open, public access to the yard. The regular fencing is eroding in places and allowing the trash to go down the hill to the stream below the school.
The students prepared an Earth Force board in their school's main office that included their pictures, water monitoring charts, and all our papers that were used during the creation of their fence plan. A presentation to the principal and an assistant superintendent gained the students approval for their project. By using already existing, un-used fencing that was on the school's property, the students would be helping to reduce vandalism, and the occurance of unauthorized parties, and other activities.
The students cleaned and re-painted the fencing and a work order was submitted for the maintenance department to erect the fencing.
Way to go Glasgow!
