Karen Roark and her fourth grade students from Long Branch Elementary been busy Earth Forcers during the 2005-2006 school year. After conducting an inventory of their school grounds, they found excessive pet waste was being left on their field and signs of erosion following rain events on the school grounds. Experts from Arlington County and the Fish and Wildlife Service were contacted to assist them with brainstorming feasible options to fix their problems.
The students chose to plant native plants in the erosion areas and will create an educational campaign to inform pet owners to pick up after their pets. Students submitted a mini-grant application to cover the planting and education program costs.
Great job, Long Branch!
