Five classes of Alexandra Workman's Turbo Tigers at Thomas Jefferson Middle School produced Earth Force Action Projects during the 2004-2005 school year. The year began with the classes monitoring Four Mile Run at Alcova Heights Park in Arlington County, VA.
Phil Loar from the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services visted the Turbo Tigers and helped to explain their monitoring findings and provide insight into the Fecal Coliform problems facing Arlington County.
- First Period created a poster campaign encouraging dog owners to clean up after the dogs. The posters were posted in parks and public buildings.
- Second Period held a Saturday "Dog Fair" that sold pooper scoopers and informed dog owners of the importance of cleaning up after their pet.
- Third Period taped a "public service announcement" about the proper disposal of litter.
- Fourth Period bought pooper scoopers and used the "Dog Fair" to distribute them to dog owners.
- Fifth Period built and installed plastic bag holders in Alcova Heights Park for dog owners to pick up after their dogs in a collaborative effort with Arlington County.
At the conclusion of their projects, the students told their story through scrapbooks, pictured with this article.
