The North East Denver Youth Engagement Zone

Vision: A thriving civic culture through youth leadership and engagement

Mission: Northeast Denver Youth Engagement Zone (NDYEZ) is a collaboration that connects schools, community agencies, businesses, parents, youth and residents in a concerted effort to create multiple community-based learning experiences for youth to:

  • Realize their human potential
  • Become actively engaged as leaders
  • Address critical community needs
  • Create a legacy of civic culture
Learn and Serve America is the lead sponsor of our North East Denver Youth Engagement Zone. The Zone is centered on the topic of "urban climate change" on the belief that given the right tools, young people can transform their urban climate using green technologies all the while preparing themselves to be a part of the 21st century workforce. The Zone represents a convergence of youth, educators, service providers and community leaders in North East Denver who will integrate service-learning strategies into the fabric of their work. Together we will build green learning labs on location at three area schools (Manual High School, Whittier K-8 and Cole Arts and Science Academy), and at the offices of two partner organizations (Youth Biz and Redline). As a group, we are committed to equitable education as a fundamental indicator of a healthy community climate, and see high quality service learning as a strategy for accomplishing this goal.

KUPEE Energy Initiative

Earth Force is excited to be a subgrantee on a Learn and Serve America grant to the Kentucky University Partnership for Environmental Education (KUPEE). The project incorporates service learning into the teacher preparation programs at four Kentucky state universities. The KUPEE Energy Initiative develops the capacity of KUPEE members to increase environmental knowledge of the citizenry of the Commonwealth. The KUPEE Energy Initiative incorporates Earth Force's service learning approach into the methods and practice courses at each university. Through the project pre-service educators in Kentucky are developing the means to foster civic skills in the next generation of Kentuckians.
