Wal-Mart
| The partnership between Wal-Mart and Earth Force is not just one for positive headlines or press, it is only a small part of our company's larger sustainability initiatives. As a company, we are taking a look at each part of our business to see how we can take waste out and recycle what we can. Wal-Mart is working with our suppliers in all departments to reduce packaging, reducing the weight that must be carried on our trucks, reducing space we need in the stores. More and more packaging and daily use materials are being recycled in our stores as well-all plastic bags returned and cardboard boxes are baled and sent to recycling centers in a form called a "sandwich bale". Later this year even more waste will be baled, including plastic bottles, hangers, office paper, and cans. Ultimately, our purpose is to use our compactors less and less and recycle more and more. Our trucking fleet and warehousing divisions have a goal of doubling the trucks efficiency in the next ten years-we are adding 100 hybrid cars a year to our corporate fleet and opening more and more. The mission of Sea Grant is to promote wise stewardship of coastal resources, including ocean and Great Lake regions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the U.S. Department of Commerce administers Sea Grant. The educational component of Pennsylvania Sea Grant focuses on the development of curricula and other programming related to Pennsylvania's Lake Erie watershed and Delaware Estuary, placing special emphasis on the incorporation of Sea Grant, Delaware Estuary, and Great Lakes related materials into elementary, middle, and high school curricula. The strategy includes a balance between classroom work and field experience. The ultimate goal is to promote environmental awareness and stewardship among our youth. Pennsylvania Sea Grant staff is working cooperatively with Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force and Delaware Valley Earth Force and other providers of environmental education, including: Penn State Cooperative Extension; other Sea Grant Programs, especially Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and other Great Lakes and mid-Atlantic programs; Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP); the staff at Presque Isle State Park; Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies;and various other programs in the Delaware Estuary. This approach helps ensure a reduced duplication of effort leading to a systematic and cooperative approach to the delivery of environmental education within the two watersheds. |

Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force partnered with Erie Times News in Education to provide the Erie commmunity with education on environmental issues. This school year the emphasis is on nonpoint source Pollution. The page is published every Tuesday. On their GoErie.com you can read:
"Recent cutbacks in educational funding make it difficult for schools to keep up with the demand for quality educational materials. Newspapers serve as an exceptional supplement to textbooks. After all, they are the remarkable textbook. Studies have shown that newspapers used in schools have a positive influence on reading skills of comprehension, vocabulary development, general reading achievement, and in some cases, motivation to read. By partnering with NIE your business becomes part of the solution to the education crisis and your dollars help students and teachers right here in the community you serve. Your business will gain recognition in the Erie Times-News and on this Web Site and it's as simple as clicking here or calling Anna McCartney at (814) 870-1820 for more information on one of our partnership opportunities."
