Schools and Organizations

These schools are currently participating in Earth Force programming for the 2009-2010 school year.   Read below for updates on their Earth Force projects! 

Berkeley County:

 

Goose Creek High School - Goose Creek, SC -

 At Goose Creek High School students in Ms. Mahwish McIntosh’s service learning classes are developing projects focused on 2 of South Carolina’s biggest issues. One group of students is working on a SkillsUSA grant to improve energy efficiency at GCHS by changing light bulbs and installing motion detectors in classrooms and common areas. Another group of students is working on a campaign to increase awareness about the dangers and costs of teenage pregnancy. GCHS is also home to Jerri who is a member of the Earth Force EYC, and sits on the Earth Force Community Action Board.

St. Stephen Elementary - St. Stephen, SC

 Charleston County:

Academic Magnet High School - North Charleston, SC -

Ms. Katy Roop’s Marine Science classes are continuing their work on monitoring and improving Noisette Creek near the Academic Magnet High School. This project has been ongoing for several years with the students handling data collection for this highly impacted creek. Earth Force EYC members, Hampton and Anastasia, also attend AMHS.

Belle Hall Elementary School - Mount Pleasant, SC -

Belle Hall Elementary School SAIL students are creating multiple service projects this year with a little help from Ms. Eva Stratos. BHES students complete several projects each year while working with Ms. Stratos and do a great job of working with their community partners to enhance the scale of their projects. We always look forward to the exciting projects developed by Ms. Stratos’s students.

Burke High School - City of Charleston, SC -

Two Burke educators attended our energy education workshop in late September.  We look forward to reporting on their efforts to conserve energy at Burke!

Charleston Charter School for Math & Science - City of Charleston, SC -

Charleston Day School - City of Charleston, SC -

Jocelyn Hurley’s students in the Earth Force Club at Charleston Day School are exploring their options about potential projects in the community. These students have researched issues like energy overuse, soil and water quality and invasive species and have spoken with representatives from SC Aquarium and SC Department of Natural Resources.

Garrett Academy of Technology - North Charleston, SC -Goodwin Elementary School - North Charleston, SC - 

 Students at Garrett Academy of Technology have been developing a project with our local electricity provider to create their own energy using biofuels generated from their technology classes. Under the guidance of Mr. Milton Howard and Mr. Michael Branch, these students hope to set up a model system for other area schools. Additionally students in Ms. Lirazan’s classes are looking for other ways to conserve electricity at GAT while Larnell , Justin and Bianca, students at GAT, are all a part of the Earth Force EYC.

Goodwin Elementary - North Charleston, SC -

After her Earth Force training, educator Susan Schottler is extremely excited to get her student gardening club up and running. She recently applied for a grant with the help of Earth Force and if awarded will allow her and her students to develop an on campus rain garden.

Florence Crittendon Programs of SC - City of Charleston, SC -

Earth Force enjoys working with FCP each year and involving them in many of our community events.  We hope to see another amazing project from these students this school year.

Frierson Elementary - Wadamalaw Island, SC -

Haut Gap Middle School - Johns Island, SC -

Earth Force has worked with Haut Gap for many years now and the students always come up with amazing projects!  Stay tuned for up

James Island Middle School - James Island, SC -

 At James Island Middle School, Earth Force is a state of mind! Teachers in 6th, 7th and 8th grades work together to give students multiple opportunities to work on service projects both within and outside the JIMS halls. Students have worked for 2 years to reduce their waste in the cafeteria and have now set their sights on the energy bill. We are excited to see the new and creative ways that JIMS students GO GREEN!

James Island Charter High - James Island, SC -

At James Island Charter High School, Ms. Michelle Lee’s students have Earth Force projects in their classrooms as well as their clubs! Youth from JICHS are leading the way on developing projects to restore/protect dunes on Folly Beach, protect sea turtle nesting habitats as well as work to improve energy use at their school.

Memminger Elementary - City of Charleston, SC -

Stiles Point Elementary School - James Island, SC - We look forward to Ms. Roberson returning from maternity leave, so her students can get started on their spring semester Earth Force project.

Stono Park Elementary - West Ashley, SC -                                                                                                                                                                          Under the leadership of Guidance Counselor and trained Earth Force facilitator, Cynthia Thomas, the students at Stono Park received a grant to build a garden on their school grounds!

 

Wando High School - Mount Pleasant, SC

Wando High students in 2nd block Environmental Science class received a Project Impact grant to work on educating primary school students about how to “Go Green”.  Ms. Michele Powell’s students will be performing skits and doing hands-on activities with 75 first grade students at Laurel Hill school on December 1, 2009.

 Colleton County:

 Northside Elementary School - Walterboro, SC 

Each year, our lead educator, Cathy Nelson works with an after school club to maintain and expand the community garden established in 2007.  We look forward to see what blooms this spring in the garden!

 Dorchester County:

Clay Hill Middle School - Ridgeville, SC

Clay Hill has participated in several Earth Force events/projects over the last few years and we look forward to seeing what their students come up with this year!

Harleyville-Ridgeville Elementary - Dorchester, SC

To be trained in early 2010....we look forward to their project updates!

Community Based Organization Partnerships:

 Boys & Girls Club Partnership:

Through a new partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Trident Area, students at Goodwin Elementary School and Jerry Zucker Middle School will have the chance to get dirty while going green. These students will be developing projects on the school grounds to create gardens or habitats for native species. We can’t wait to see what comes out of these awesome Earth Force Clubs!

Michaux Conservancy Partnership:

Through an exciting partnership with The Michaux Conservancy, students at Chicora Elementary School, North Charleston Elementary & Jerry Zucker Middle School will have a chance to create their own service projects to improve water quality in and around Noisette Creek.
